Today, I wanted to share with you a few ways that our large family saves money. The number one way I think we save money is by purging our home and keeping things simple. This saves us time and money. We stick to what we need and try to be content with as little as possible. We are not minimalist but we do try to live a frugal and simple life. Our family has not perfected the art of this just yet, but we are trying.
Finding ways to save
One thing we love to do is make our own applesauce packs. I purchase large jars of applesauce from the grocery store and fill reusable packs that we purchased on Amazon. They are great for on the go, and as an easy snack the kids can just grab out of the fridge on their own. You can fill these with anything from yogurt to smoothies. These are always a hit at my house. I would recommend also buying a large mouth funnel if you don’t have one, for faster, less messy and easy filling.
Another way we save money is shopping online in general. If you live in a rural area this might be something you want to consider. Driving back and forth to the nearest city can get very costly. This can quickly add up to more than shipping cost. Additionally, there are many free shipping coupons that you can take advantage of.
Another way we have saved over the years is by using cloth diapers and cloth baby wipes. I love items that can be reused over and over again. Modern cloth diapers can become very expensive. I prefer prefolds and reusable covers. Prefolds are a very good, and cost effective way to cloth diaper.
Making it ourselves
Additionally,we do some of the obvious things like eating at home, meal planning, and well….planning everything. We make our laundry detergent, most of the time. I have to be honest because I love the Method Laundry detergent, and will fork over that $12.99 on occasion.
We also make our own body butter. A small container of Shea Butter added to our mixture can last our family for weeks. It’s all natural and perfect for a few of my children with sensitive skin. We mix Shea Butter with Coconut Oil, and melt it down in the microwave. Next we let in cool in the fridge for about thirty minutes to an hour. Lastly, we whip it with the handheld mixer to make it nice and creamy. Sometimes I will also add in Jojoba oil or other oils. It is pretty oily, so you don’t need to use much. A little really does go a long way. I do not purchase any other lotions or oil. This mixture is all that we use, and has saved us a ton. You can also just use the Shea Butter without mixing it with anything. I place it into ball containers and that’s it. This is so easy to make that my nine year old does it for us now. We also use the Shea Butter on our hair. Hope to chat again soon.
