The Disease of Debt
Debt is like a deadly disease that spreads and often seems to have no end. There are so many people who have just given up and have chosen to believe that debt is normal. The popular thought seems to be that you will always have a bill, so it doesn’t matter. This could not be further from the truth. That is a lie and it keeps so many people in bondage. Debt is bondage! The Bible tells us that the borrower is slave to the lender. How many people avoid answering their phone or checking the mail because of the bondage of debt? I know that I don’t want anything causing me added anxiety or controlling my life.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.-Proverbs 22:7 KJV
I think that there are several reasons for this problem. Let’s look at a few of them here.
1.Being uneducated in the area of finances.
One of the biggest problems that I see is that we have no idea how to handle our money. Many of us were not taught to save, invest and budget. We are suffering because of our lack of knowledge.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children
2. We believe the lies of the culture. The culture tells us bigger is always better and that the “Jones” know best. This is just another lie that causes discontentment. We are always striving for more and more of the wrong things. The culture plays on the self-esteem of people and our need to be accepted. Therefore we purchase things we cannot afford just to feel good about ourselves and keep up. The world is becoming a place of have and have not, and that is very sad. There is so much more that could be said about lies from the culture that many people accept.
Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. KJV
3. We want everything right now. Most of us in American are so privileged. I hate to say it, but we are spoiled and impatient. There are many reasons for this also. We don’t know how to wait, work hard and save. Therefore, we end up with debt.
4. Other factors also impact us. For many, college loans are not necessary. There are very successful entrepreneurs that do not have a college education. Then there are medical bills that people are not prepared for and other emergencies. This is where the importance of saving and having an emergency fund comes in.
Let’s Find a Solution
The effects of debt are long lasting and devastating. There are too many people who have nothing to leave their children other than a legacy of debt. We can change that and give our children and children’s’ children a better future. It won’t always be easy, but it is possible. It angers me to see the people of God lacking and not enjoying our lives because of financial issues. We serve a God who holds the world in the palm of His hand. He promised us that He would not keep any good things from us.
Let’s grow in knowledge and be the holy (unique and set apart) people God has called us to be. We live in the upside down kingdom that is counter cultural. Don’t forget that this is not our true home and we don’t have to allow this culture to decide how we live in relation to the world. Yes, we have dual citizenship but our loyalty is first and foremost to the kingdom of the Most High God. What does God have to say regarding our finances? How should we respond in obedience to Him? I refuse to believe that God intended for His people to be trapped in the bondage of debt. Many of us have gotten ourselves into this mess due to ignorance. I am here to tell you, God will give you grace and help you in this area. He is the God of restoration.
I could go on about this topic forever. I don’t want to make this too long, so I will leave you with this: Pray, be diligent in obedience ,and watch what God will do in your life.
If this sounds a little preachy, I am preachers kids twice over. Some times I just can’t help it.
Blessing until next time-Nay
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”- Hebrews 13:5 KJV
